FEEL because I’ve used most
(if not all) of those same excuses that I mentioned above!
There
used to be a time along my grappling journey where I thought
that not being able to get to the gym to train was an acceptable
“reason” to not train. And even though my coaches were try to
change my mindset, I was convinced if I couldn’t get to the gym for
a two-hour training session, that I was wasting my time!
So,
what happened to me?
Well,
back when I was a purple belt in 2003 and made the decision to start
competing again, I couldn’t always stay for advanced grappling class
to train. And with my old, negative mindset still being in control at the
time, I felt if I couldn’t make it to class, my skills would
diminish and I would remain a perennial loser! I knew that I needed an answer to my
training problem, but I was clueless and didn’t know what to do.

Fortunately
for me, the answer to my problem came to me in the form of a television
commercial. While watching TV one
day, I saw a commercial of the Olympic hopeful Cael Sanderson (who
hadn’t won the gold medal at that time). And in the commercial, Cael was
“shadow wrestling” in the wrestling room in the dark by
himself. It was then that I had a…

If
shadow grappling was a good training tool for wrestlers, boxers, and
kickboxers, what was stopping BJJers/submission grapplers from using the
same training tool as well? And the more I
thought about it, the better the idea sounded to me. So, armed with my “bright
idea”, I built a BJJ routine from my own grappling gameplan and
started doing them when I was at home or couldn’t stay for the
class to train.
And
do you know what my bright idea yielded?
Much to my surprise, very…

I
have to tell you that I was completely blown away by my discovery! My
technique was polished, my reaction time improved since I didn’t have
to think about what to do because I recognized the setup when it
happened, and I created a cardio drill that consisted of natural
grappling movements. The
“shadow grappling” worked so well, that I started doing them
before workouts as part of my training regimen.
After
a while, my students and teammates noticed that I was training less, but
still improving and staying technically sharp on the mat. And once I
shared my routine with them, they started doing it as well. In fact, the routine seemed to fit
perfectly for those students that couldn’t train because of:
- Family commitments
- Work or business travel
commitments
- Sore bodies that are
physically banged up and need a good workout that wouldn’t
aggravate those bumps and bruises
- Injury recovery and needing
a workout to slowly return them back to full training
And
if you’re STILL skeptical and don’t think that you can
accomplish anything significant by training for “just” 10
minutes, here’s an experiment for you…
Let someone kick you in the face for 10 minutes, grapple with
someone for 10 minutes straight at 100 percent max output, or box someone
3-3 minute rounds!

I’m
no prophet, but I’m willing to bet my kid’s college money on
a prediction that at the end of that little experiment, your opinion of how
“insignificant” a 10 minute workout can be will have changed
dramatically!
I
used to think that quantity (not quality) was the ONLY key to my grappling improvement and success. I
used to be part of that crowd that thought anything less than a 2 hour
practice was a waste of my time.
And though I agree that more time on the mat is always better,
some time on the mat (or at home) training (even 10 minutes) is better
than nothing! And if
someone would’ve told me that I could do 50-100 correctly performed
Armbars in 10 minutes in my living room at home, 3 time a week and
improve my sparring technique, I would’ve laughed in their face!

I’m not laughing now. In
